What to Do When You Don’t Know What You Want (And Why That’s Okay)

When “I Don’t Know” Isn’t a Problem

There comes a point on most soul journeys where the usual questions stop working. What’s your next goal? Where do you see yourself in five years? What do you want? And instead of clarity, there’s just… static. No excitement. No pull. No inner yes.

If you’ve found yourself here, let me say this clearly: not knowing what you want is not a failure. It isn’t a lack of ambition, insight, or spiritual progress. In many cases, it’s the opposite. It’s a sign that you’re no longer willing to settle for surface-level answers, borrowed desires, or shiny distractions that don’t actually nourish you.

This is uncomfortable territory. Society prefers neat narratives, visible achievements, and tidy timelines. But witchcraft – real witchcraft – has always been about truth over convenience. And the truth is this: “What do I really want?” is not a question you answer once. It’s a question you return to, again and again, as you peel back layers of conditioning and get closer to yourself.

Why Wanting Feels So Confusing

Most of us were never taught how to want honestly.

From an early age, we’re given templates: success should look like this, happiness should look like that, worth should be measurable, visible, and preferably admired by others. Over time, those templates sink in so deeply that we stop questioning them. We chase careers, relationships, homes, lifestyles – not because they align with our inner compass, but because they’re familiar, praised, and socially rewarded.

The trouble begins when those external markers stop delivering the sense of fulfilment they promised. You get the thing… and the feeling doesn’t arrive. Or it arrives briefly, then fades, leaving behind a quiet, nagging sense of is this really it?

At this point, many people double down. They assume they simply haven’t reached the right version yet. A bigger house. A better job. A different partner. Something shinier. Something more impressive. Something that will finally make them feel whole.

But external things were never designed to patch internal gaps. They distract, not heal. And when distraction stops working, confusion creeps in.

The Difference Between Wanting Things and Wanting Feelings

Here’s a shift that changes everything: most desires are not about things at all. They’re about feelings.

We don’t want the job – we want security, autonomy, or recognition.
We don’t want the relationship – we want connection, safety, or intimacy.
We don’t want the house – we want peace, belonging, or rest.

When we focus exclusively on the object, we miss the deeper truth beneath it. And when the object fails to deliver the feeling long-term (because it usually does), we assume the problem is us.

This is where many manifestation teachings quietly go astray. Manifesting a specific external outcome often requires very real, very practical effort – skills, resources, timing, and persistence. Magick alone does not replace action, nor should it. Anyone telling you otherwise is selling fantasy, not empowerment.

But manifesting states of being works differently. When you intentionally focus on cultivating peace, authenticity, kindness, or alignment, something powerful happens. You begin to notice them more. You make choices that support them. You orient your life around them. Magick aside, this is sound psychology: attention shapes perception, and perception shapes lived reality.

In that sense, perspective is reality.

Looking Outside Yourself Will Never Make You Feel Whole

We live in a culture that encourages constant outward seeking. Buy this. Become that. Fix yourself. Upgrade your life. And underneath it all is a subtle message: you are not enough as you are.

Witchcraft, at its core, challenges that lie.

True fulfilment doesn’t come from accumulation. It comes from alignment. From knowing what matters to you – not in theory, but in practice. From living in a way that matches your values, your ethics, and your inner truth, even when that truth is inconvenient or unpopular.

This is where self-knowledge becomes essential. And self-knowledge is not always gentle. It asks uncomfortable questions. It exposes the ways we’ve betrayed ourselves for approval, safety, or ease. It reveals where we’ve been chasing distraction instead of listening to our own needs.

That kind of honesty can be deeply unsettling – and yes, it can invite resistance from others. Not everyone is comfortable around someone who has stopped playing by shallow rules. But clarity has a cost, and for many witches, it’s a cost worth paying.

Self-Worth, Integrity, and the Courage to Be Honest

One of the most important questions to ask when you don’t know what you want is this: how do I measure my worth?

Is it based on how others see you? How productive you are? How impressive your life looks from the outside? Or is it measured internally – by your integrity, your compassion, your alignment with your own values?

When worth is externally measured, desire becomes distorted. You start wanting what will earn approval rather than what will bring peace. You chase what looks good rather than what feels true. And over time, the disconnect grows.

Reclaiming your sense of worth is not glamorous work. It often involves saying no where you used to say yes, disappointing people who benefitted from your compliance, and choosing paths that don’t come with applause. But it also brings something far more valuable: a quiet, steady sense of rightness that doesn’t depend on anyone else’s permission.

A Gentler Way to Approach Manifestation

This is where manifestation can be reclaimed as a grounded, ethical practice rather than a wish-and-wait fantasy.

If you’re feeling stuck or unclear, it may not be that you don’t know what you want – it may be that you’re trying to manifest outcomes without first understanding your deeper needs. This is why focusing on alignment matters more than visualising objects.

In my Manifestation Coaching sessions, we explore exactly this distinction. Manifestation isn’t about forcing the universe to deliver a shiny reward. It’s about aligning your energy, intentions, and actions with what truly matters to you. Often, that means realising that fulfilment doesn’t come from material achievements at all, but from living in deeper alignment with your values and emotional needs.

When clarity grows from the inside out, manifestation becomes less about control and more about coherence. And from there, meaningful change becomes far more achievable.

Gentle Questions to Sit With

You don’t need answers straight away. You don’t need a plan. You don’t need to figure out your entire future before the kettle boils. But you can begin by noticing.

  • Try sitting with these questions, slowly, over time:
  • Which desires in my life genuinely feel like mine?
  • What feelings am I hoping certain goals or achievements will give me?
  • Where am I seeking distraction instead of fulfilment?
  • What does alignment feel like in my body, not just my thoughts?

There’s no rush here. Witchcraft is patient. Self-knowledge unfolds in spirals, not straight lines.

Not Knowing Is Part of the Path

If you don’t know what you want right now, that doesn’t mean you’re lost. It means you’re listening more closely than before. It means the old answers no longer satisfy, and the deeper ones are still forming.

Clarity doesn’t arrive through pressure. It emerges through honesty, attention, and a willingness to sit with uncertainty without immediately trying to escape it.

So be gentle with yourself. Honour the questions. Let go of the need to perform certainty. What you want will reveal itself – not as a lightning bolt, but as a quiet knowing that grows stronger the more you learn to trust yourself.

And that, truly, is where the real magick lives.
