When most people think of tarot, they imagine crystal balls, dramatic pronouncements, and clear-cut answers about the future. But at Wayward Witchery, that’s not how we read the cards.

In this post (and the companion video above), I share why I don’t offer predictive tarot readings – and what I do instead that I believe is far more powerful, soulful, and empowering.

What Are Predictive Readings, Anyway?

Predictive readings focus on questions like:

👔 “Will I get the job?”

♥️ “Is this the one?”

❓ “What will happen next?”

They seek definitive answers about future events. And while I completely understand the urge for clarity (especially when life feels chaotic), I started to notice something troubling when I first began reading professionally: clients came back again and again with the same questions. They weren’t seeking insight – they were chasing hope.

But hope without action isn’t healing. It’s just waiting.

The Fate vs Free Will Paradox

One of the biggest questions in tarot (and life) is whether our future is fated or free. Here’s the honest truth: we don’t actually know.

🎭 If everything is fated, prediction becomes theatre.

🎱 If we have full free will, prediction becomes nearly impossible.

Either way, fixating on the future becomes a distraction. The real power lives in the now.

As Nietzsche said: “Live so that thou mayest desire to live again. That is thy duty.”

Whether or not fate is real, you are the one living your life – right here, right now.

Why Predictive Tarot Isn’t Just Ineffective – It Can Be Harmful

There are three big reasons I don’t offer prediction:

1️⃣ It reinforces external validation.
We live in a world that trains us to look outward for meaning: likes, grades, promotions. Predictive readings feed that same cycle.

2️⃣ It can create dependency.
“I can’t decide unless I ask the cards” is not the vibe. You deserve to be in the driver’s seat of your own life. Long-term clients return for fresh insight – not because they’re stuck in a feedback loop.

3️⃣ It delays healing.
If we’re always focused on what might happen, we neglect what is happening – and how we can change it.

A Tarot Reading That Empowers

So can tarot see the future? Sometimes, sort of – like a weather forecast, not a script. You might spot the storm, but what you do with it is your call.

Real empowerment is in asking: “What energy am I holding right now that shapes what happens next?“

Because that’s the spell.

That’s the magick.

The Deeper Why

If you’re looking for certainty, prediction might seem comforting. But tarot isn’t about reward and punishment, or scoring cosmic brownie points. Spiritual growth means growing for its own sake. Not to impress a ‘god’. Not to avoid a curse. But to live with intention, depth and alignment.

As Rust Cohle once said: “If the only thing keeping a person decent is the expectation of divine reward, then, brother, that person is a piece of shit.”

– Spicy? Yes. Wrong? No.

I don’t read to tell you what will happen. I read to help you become the person you want to be.

Tarot, at its best, is not about fixing a future in place – it’s about understanding the present clearly enough to choose your next steps with intention.
